Through 15 years of operations, MEII has developed a deep understanding of the types of loans that banks and financial intermediaries are interested in supporting. We have seen firsthand that many committed entrepreneurs with promising business initiatives lack the necessary financial data and capacity to demonstrate the proper cashflow management and accounting needed to justify financing.

Our solution: Tamweeli Assist.

Tamweeli Assist was created to offer financial literacy and training to businesses, with a focus on bookkeeping and account management. Through the program, the Tamweeli team works with SMEs and entrepreneurs over the course of a year to adopt an appropriate accounting software to systematically record the financial transactions of their businesses, to better manage and understand their financial performance, and to develop a cash-flow based business plan.

The adoption of accounting software is an essential intervention for many loan applications, and a number of financial intermediaries working with Tamweeli have even made it a prerequisite for loan approvals.

Thanks to the generous support of its partner donors, Tamweeli Assist sponsors 80% of the cost of locally available off the shelf, accounting software licenses during the first year of usage. Tamweeli Assist also pairs these enterprises, if needed, with an undergraduate accounting student trained by MEII to do bookkeeping. Over the course of a year-long internship, the accounting student will record the financial transactions of the enterprise while gaining valuable work experience.  This will allow more experienced Tamweeli business advisors to review the actual financial data contained within the accounting software directly with the entrepreneurs, serving as an additional tool to help them improve their financial acumen.
